The Story of Sveti Stefan

The Story of Sveti Stefan, Montenegro’s Hidden Gem

Published On: September 22, 2026By Categories: Visual Stories

Some of the best travel memories are the ones you never planned for.

During our road trip from Athens to Dubrovnik, we found ourselves cruising along the scenic coastal roads of Montenegro. We had just passed the town of Bar and were heading north toward Portonovi, where we were staying for the night.

Out of nowhere, a view through the car window stopped us in our tracks: a tiny, rugged islet floating just off the coast, packed with stone cottages featuring warm red-tiled roofs. The way the settlement blended into the surrounding landscape felt completely surreal.

Pulling over wasn’t just an option—it was an absolute necessity.

Standing at the roadside viewpoint, taking in the full panorama for the first time, we were completely awestruck. My immediate thought was: “How on earth did I miss this when planning our route?”

We didn’t have time to walk down to the beach right then, but we made a mental note to visit properly on our return journey back to Athens. Unfortunately, when we stopped by a few days later, rain had set in, putting an end to any hopes of flying the drone. Still, even under gray skies and raindrops, the charm of the place was undeniable.

That magical little rock was Sveti Stefan—and behind its fairy-tale silhouette lies a fascinating story.

The History of Sveti Stefan

From a 15th-Century Fortress to a Pirate Hideout

Long before it caught the eye of luxury travelers, Sveti Stefan was a humble fishing village with a strategic purpose.

Back in 1442, the local Paštrovići clan built fortifications on the island to defend their coastal families against invading Ottoman forces and Adriatic pirates. They named the settlement after its main church, dedicated to Saint Stephen, which still stands at the island’s highest point today.

For centuries, life on the island was simple and self-contained. Local families built sturdy stone homes to withstand the sea winds, connected by narrow cobblestone lanes and quiet courtyards.

The Mid-Century Metamorphosis

By the mid-20th century, economic hardship and emigration had left the village almost deserted. But in the 1950s, the Yugoslav government stepped in with an ambitious vision.

Instead of letting the village fall into decay, they bought the property from the remaining residents and undertook a massive transformation: turning the entire island into a one-of-a-kind resort.

The brilliant part of the project was its preservation. The exterior of every stone house, roof, and alleyway was kept intact, preserving the medieval village look, while the interiors were fitted with world-class modern luxury.

Playground of the 1960s Jet Set

By the 1960s and 70s, Sveti Stefan had become an exclusive haven for international celebrities, royalty, and world leaders seeking privacy in a breathtaking setting.

Hollywood legends like Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Kirk Douglas strolled down its stone paths. Princess Margaret visited, and even chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer played his famous 1992 rematch against Boris Spassky here.

It was, without a doubt, the crown jewel of Yugoslav tourism.

The History of Sveti Stefan

Following the turbulent 1990s, the island lost some of its former glory. That changed in the late 2000s when the Montenegrin government leased the landmark to Aman Resorts, one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-luxury hotel brands.

Reopened as Aman Sveti Stefan, the resort reclaimed its status among high-end travelers. However, its recent history hasn’t been without drama.

In 2021, a heated dispute broke out between the resort operators and the local government regarding public access to the surrounding beaches, including the famous Queen’s Beach. The disagreement led to a temporary closure that lasted for several years. Fortunately for travelers, after prolonged negotiations, a resolution was reached, ensuring this iconic destination reopens its doors to guests once again.

Final Thoughts

Even if you only catch a glimpse of Sveti Stefan from the coastal highway, its unique blend of history, architecture, and dramatic Adriatic backdrop makes it an unforgettable stop on any Montenegrin road trip.

It’s a place where 15th-century maritime history meets 20th-century Hollywood glamor—a true Mediterranean icon that’s well worth pulling over for.
